Why this bundle

The shortest path from never having used a fountain pen to writing with one daily. A Pilot Kakuno (the pen Japanese schools and stationery shops recommend to first-time users), plus two notebooks with paper that won't bleed or feather under wet ink.

Most fountain pen complaints β€” bleed-through, scratchy lines, ink running on the page β€” come from using normal paper, not from the pen. The Midori MD Dot Grid uses Midori's proprietary MD paper, which is the stationery-world reference standard for fountain pen friendliness. The Maruman Mnemosyne uses a slightly different stock that's smoother and faster to write on; pairing the two lets you feel the difference and figure out which you actually prefer.

The Kakuno is plastic-bodied with a smiley face etched on the nib (so you can tell which side is up β€” a real beginner-friendly touch). It's the pen people keep using ten years after they "upgrade."

Who it's for

For anyone who's been curious about fountain pens but doesn't want to spend $80+ on a starter mistake. Also a solid gift for journalers, students starting a thesis, or someone moving from ballpoints because their hand cramps. No prior knowledge required.

Frequently asked

Do I need to buy ink separately?
The Kakuno ships with one Pilot cartridge included β€” enough to start writing immediately. Replacement Pilot IC-100 cartridges run about $5 per 6-pack. If you want bottled ink, you will also need a Pilot CON-40 converter (~$10), sold separately.
Is the nib fine or medium?
This is the F (fine) nib, which is roughly equivalent to a Western extra-fine. Japanese nibs run finer than European ones β€” F here writes a thinner line than an F from Lamy or Pelikan.
Will it work for left-handed writers?
Yes, with a small adjustment. The Kakuno has a triangular grip that some left-handed writers prefer to rotate slightly. Drying time on MD and Mnemosyne paper is moderate β€” give it 2-3 seconds before laying your hand back down.
Why two notebooks instead of one bigger one?
Different paper stocks teach you what you like before you commit to a $20+ notebook. MD paper has a soft, slow-feel finish; Mnemosyne is smoother and quicker. After a few weeks of use you will know which to restock.
Can I take a fountain pen on a plane?
Yes β€” but empty it or fill the converter completely full. Half-full cartridges expand at altitude and can leak. Most regular fliers keep their pen capped tip-up in a shirt pocket.
