Restricted Goods Policy
Last updated: May 2026
Tokyo Carry ships internationally from Japan. International shipping is governed by carrier rules, country import laws, and international air-cargo safety regulations. Some items can’t legally be shipped at all, others can ship only to certain countries, and some categories are temporarily disabled while we complete additional compliance work.
This page is organized into three sections:
- Items we never sell
- Items sold with destination or carrier restrictions
- Categories temporarily disabled pending compliance review
If you have a specific question about whether something can ship to your country, email hello@tokyocarry.com before ordering.
Payment-processor restrictions may also apply. Some products that are legal to own or import in your country may still be unavailable through Tokyo Carry because our payment processor, carriers, or fulfillment partners do not support them.
1. Items we never sell
The following are excluded from our catalog and will never be shipped, regardless of destination:
- Compressed gas and aerosols — gas canisters, helium, fluorocarbons, camping gas, spray cans (hairspray, pesticide spray, lacquer, deodorant).
- Flammable liquids — gasoline, kerosene, alcohol-based fuel, organic solvents, thinners, lighter fluid.
- Explosives and pyrotechnics — fireworks, firecrackers, ammunition, gunpowder, flares.
- Firearms, weapons, and ammunition — guns of any kind, gun parts, ammunition, tasers, stun guns.
- Disguised weapons — including knives or other implements disguised as everyday objects.
- Chemicals and biohazards — pesticides, herbicides, formalin, formaldehyde, sodium hydroxide, bleach, peroxides, oxidizers, mercury and mercury-containing devices, asbestos, radioactive materials.
- Drugs and pharmaceuticals — prescription medication, over-the-counter medication, supplements, drug paraphernalia, anesthetics, narcotics.
- Tobacco and vaping products — cigarettes, cigars, e-cigarettes, vape pens, e-liquid.
- Live or perishable goods — animals, insects, plants with soil, bonsai, fresh meat or seafood, eggs, dairy, anything requiring refrigeration.
- Counterfeit goods, pirated media.
- CITES / endangered species products — actual ivory (the material, not the color name), actual tortoiseshell (the material, not the pattern), certain furs, snake/lizard/crocodile skin, certain coral, certain wood species, taxidermy of protected species.
- Currency, lottery tickets, financial instruments.
- Cultural property — registered National Treasures, registered Important Cultural Properties, registered Important Art Objects of Japan.
- Defective or damaged batteries of any chemistry.
- Stand-alone (non-installed) lithium batteries and power banks.
If a product is listed by mistake and falls into any of these categories, we will cancel and refund the order.
2. Items sold with destination or carrier restrictions
Some products can ship to most countries but not all. Where applicable, we’ll note country restrictions on the product page or at checkout.
Cosmetics and personal care
- Products containing ethanol (perfume, alcohol-based toner, nail polish, hair tonic, certain shampoos) are unshippable internationally by most carriers and are not available on Tokyo Carry.
- Products without ethanol (most skincare, lipstick, eyeliner, brushes) generally ship fine but may have country-specific exclusions (e.g. Australia, Spain, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Israel, Malaysia, Brazil).
Food and beverage
- Heat-stable shelf-stable foods can ship to most countries, but Canada, France, China, Macau, Hong Kong, and several EU countries have specific restrictions or bans.
- Alcoholic beverages: not currently sold on Tokyo Carry.
Items containing batteries
- Items with lithium-ion batteries installed in the device can be shipped to most destinations under regulated conditions, but a list of countries cannot accept them at all. The list changes; we maintain it internally and will not ship to a country where batteries aren’t permitted.
- We do not ship loose batteries, damaged batteries, recalled batteries, or power banks internationally.
Magnets
Items containing strong magnets are restricted by air carriers and need special handling.
Jewelry and precious metals
High-value jewelry, gold, and diamonds have shipping restrictions by carrier and country, and may require additional documentation, insurance, or buyer ID. We may need to contact you for additional information before fulfilling such orders.
Adult media (DVD/Blu-ray)
Not shippable to the U.S. We currently do not list adult media on Tokyo Carry.
3. Temporarily disabled pending compliance review
These categories are not currently available on Tokyo Carry while we complete additional compliance work. We may re-enable them in future:
- Knives — sales are currently disabled while we complete country-specific compliance, age-verification (including UK Offensive Weapons Act 2019 requirements), carrier acceptance, and customs review.
- Airsoft and replica weapons — disabled.
- High-value individual items (over USD $100 cost-of-goods) — disabled to manage launch operational complexity.
Country-specific notes
A few destinations have unusually broad import restrictions that affect what we can ship:
- United States — most consumer goods are fine; some media and battery rules apply. All U.S. shipments are pre-paid for duties (DDP).
- Canada — strict rules on food, supplements, and certain electronics.
- Australia — strict biosecurity and import declarations; food, plants, leather, and many cosmetics are restricted.
- European Union and UK — VAT collection rules, food/cosmetic ingredient restrictions, REACH chemical regulations.
- China, Hong Kong, Macau — broad list of restricted goods, lengthy customs review.
We follow each carrier’s most current rules and will not ship anything that violates them. If we can’t ship your order, we will email you and refund.
Customs declarations
We declare the actual purchase value and a truthful product description on every shipment. We do not mark items as “gift” to avoid duty, do not under-declare value, and do not mislabel contents.
Why this matters
International air cargo is regulated for safety. A single mishandled lithium battery has caused fatal aircraft fires. Counterfeit goods have triggered customs seizures that affect entire shipping lanes. We follow the rules because the alternative is unsafe, illegal, and ultimately bad for our customers.
Updates
Carrier rules and country import laws change frequently. This page reflects our practice as of the date above; we update it as rules change. If you’re unsure about a specific item or destination, the safest move is to email us before ordering.
