Why this bundle

A complete starter setup for someone who wants to actually burn incense daily, not just keep a stick in a drawer. Two Nippon Kodo scents (Japan's oldest fragrance house, founded 1575) and a FELIS brass-and-glass holder with a built-in ash catcher.

The two incenses cover the two main ways Japanese incense is used. The Seiun Violet is loose (granular) β€” designed for low-smoke practice, lit on charcoal or directly on a fireproof tray, with a mellow heritage sandalwood profile. The Uno Chiyo Sakura is stick form, also low-smoke, with the cherry-blossom scent that's nearly impossible to find as more than a bath salt outside Japan.

The FELIS holder is what makes this a daily practice instead of a chore. Glass ash catcher means no scrubbing burn marks off tables; the brass arm rotates so you can angle the stick over the glass. Zelkova wood base, made in Japan.

Who it's for

For people who already love incense and want better-quality scents, plus anyone with a desk meditation or wind-down ritual where smoke and ash on the surface have been a problem. Not strong enough to "scent a whole room" β€” Japanese incense is designed for close, personal listening.

Frequently asked

How do I burn loose incense without charcoal?
Pinch a small amount onto a piece of foil or a fireproof tray, light briefly with a lighter until it begins to smolder, then blow out the flame. Loose incense self-extinguishes once the surface burns through β€” typically 1-2 minutes per pinch. For longer sessions, use a self-lighting charcoal disc.
Will this set off a smoke alarm?
Both incenses are labeled low-smoke by Nippon Kodo and are far less smoky than Indian or Tibetan styles. We have not personally tested every alarm model β€” keep the holder more than 6 feet from a ceiling-mounted alarm to be safe.
How long do the incense supplies last?
275g of loose Seiun is generous β€” at 1-2g per session, that is 150+ uses. The Uno Chiyo Sakura sticks burn ~25 minutes each, with the box yielding about a month of daily use.
Can I use the FELIS holder with other incense brands?
Yes. Standard Japanese 14-18cm sticks fit perfectly. Some thicker Indian sticks will not fit the holder slot β€” if you switch brands, check stick diameter.
What is the difference between Japanese and Indian incense?
Japanese incense uses pure wood and resin (no bamboo core), burns cleaner with less smoke, and tends to be more subtle. Indian incense usually has a bamboo stick at the center that adds smoke and a slightly woody undertone. Neither is better β€” they are different traditions.
