About this craft
Arita ware originated in Saga Prefecture in the 1600s as Japan's first porcelain production. Blue-white (sometsuke) glaze technique was adapted from Chinese tradition but refined to Japan's aesthetic. UNESCO-recognized craft. Still hand-glazed by artisans in the Arita region.
