About this craft
Takasaki daruma is a regional papier-mâché craft from Gunma Prefecture dating to the Edo period. The blank-eye tradition originates from Zen Buddhist teaching; filling in eyes marks personal commitment and achievement. Takasaki remains Japan's primary daruma production center.
