About this craft
Echizen (越前) lacquerware originates from Fukui Prefecture and dates to the 8th century. Craftspeople apply multiple vegetable-resin coats, hand-polishing between layers. The vermilion (vermillion) finish is traditional urushi (漆), a natural resin harvested from Japanese lacquer trees. This represents one of Japan's oldest continuous craft traditions.

Wash by hand or dishwasher; lacquer is hardened and durable. Dry promptly after washing. Avoid extended soaking. Avoid direct flame or oven. Store in cool, dry place. Over decades, lacquer naturally develops micro-patina; this is characteristic of authentic lacquer.
