About this craft
Magewappa is a regional craft tradition from Marugame, Kagawa Prefecture, dating to the Edo period. The technique of steam-bending thin cypress or cedar slats and binding them with urushi lacquer is unique to this region. Ohitsu (rice storage bowls) are a signature product, designed to maintain rice temperature and humidity through the porous wood and breathable lacquer finish.
