About this craft
Magewappa—bent-cedar lunch boxes—originated in Odate, Akita Prefecture during the Edo period. Odate Kougeisha (est. 1946) is the region's master craftmaker. Each box is hand-bent and dried, using only natural cedar without glue. The wood's antimicrobial oils keep rice fresh.
Description
Hand-bent cedar bento box from Akita's traditional wood-working
Hand-wash only; avoid soaking. Air-dry thoroughly. Rub lightly with food-safe oil once yearly to maintain suppleness. Microwave safe; wood will warm gently. Over time, wood darkens and develops a rich grain—this is natural aging.
