About this craft
The kanna is a cornerstone of Japanese carpentry dating back centuries. Unlike Western bench planes, it pulls toward the user, using the body's weight for control. The dual-blade design (chipbreaker + iron) is uniquely Japanese, producing a shallower shaving and finer surface than single-blade Western planes.
Description
Traditional Japanese hand plane for wood-surface finishing, oak and steel
Keep blades sharp and dry; store blade-up on felt to prevent rust. Flatten the sole and back of blades before first use (this is critical and may require a whetstone). Oil wood base lightly. Adjust blade depth with incremental taps—Japanese planes require patient tuning.
