About this craft
Enmusubi (fortune-connecting) chopsticks are made by Hirano-ya, located at the entrance to Izumo Taisha shrine in Shimane Prefecture. Izumo Taisha is a Shinto shrine sacred to marriage and relationship-binding (縁結び). The tradition of selling chopsticks at the shrine entrance dates back generations; each pair is believed to bind two people's fates.
Description
Enmusubi fortune-connecting chopsticks, cherry blossom pair
Hand wash with soft sponge and mild dish soap. Avoid prolonged soaking and abrasive scrubbing. Do not place in dishwasher (despite maker claim; hand wash extends life). Pat dry immediately. Store upright in dry place. Avoid extreme heat. Over time, the lacquer patina deepens.
