About this craft
Tenugui (手拭い) is a traditional narrow cotton towel dating to the Edo period. Chūgata (中型) woodblock hand-dyeing is a heritage technique from Edo textile makers. Hamamonyo, founded in Yokohama, specializes in preserving this craft with seasonal and cultural motifs.
Description
Hand-printed spring tenugui by Yokohama artisan dyer Hamamonyo
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap; avoid chlorine bleach. Air dry to preserve print clarity. First wash may release excess dye—wash separately. Use as a kitchen towel, wall hanging, or wrapping cloth. With age, the fabric softens and the indigo or plant-based dyes may fade naturally, which is part of its character.
